Bug Hunters: Mecha Explanation

1950

In Egypt, archaeologists discovered relics of a strange but seemingly very advanced technology, in the form of humanoid robots resembling the ancient Egyptian gods of Anubis and Horus. Similar discoveries are subsequently made throughout much of the world. The United States government has confiscated these mecha, covering their tracks to prevent the general public of learning about them. It is unknown even to the top physicists and engineers in the world how they operate. Even after decades of testing the ancient mecha the military was unable to find any way to activate the odd machines. The project was canned, deemed useless by the military brass, though they decided to continue storing the odd machines and make sure the general public stayed in the shadows…

2010

Then, the Earth met an enemy no one could have predicted…

First major power outages occurred in large population centers throughout the world. Then, they began to appear. Entire cities were swarmed by millions of them.  No one was quite sure where they came from or what they were, but they soon got the names of “Bugs” for their insect-like appearance and hard exoskeletons. These creatures had the power to take over any piece of machinery and manipulate them making almost all of the militaries greatest weapons useless against them. In attempting to combat the Bugs it was found that they were vulnerable to the same kind of biological/chemical weapons as humans, but it was deemed too risky to perform a large scale “extermination” which would cost the lives of many humans as well. The Bugs were drawn to most of the world’s big cities. They were also drawn to some of the military compounds on the United State’s east coast, where they came upon some of the ancient machines that had lain dormant…

When they discovered a warehouse full of the ancient technology they were able to somehow merge with it, becoming even more powerful than ever before. It quickly became clear the machines were very powerful weapons, and the Bugs wrought unimaginable devastation with them.

2015

The Bugs have stopped their advance and seemingly lay contented in the cities they have “infested”.  All that is known in the military compound, Area 51, is very limited.  Communications from the rest of the world cut off soon after the bugs first appeared and the base had to go on full shut down to prevent being taken over like so many others.  The families of the engineers, scientists, and military enlisted/officers were allowed to live on the compound as it went on full shut down.  Underneath the base is a large compound that acts almost as a small, self-sustaining city within itself.  After five years of dormancy the commander of the base has still had difficulty deciding whether or not to send troops on reconnaissance to find information on both the bugs and the state of the world. A recent discovery has caused him to put this into perspective. A group of teenagers had snuck into a storage facility where more of the ancient machines were and one of them had somehow been able to pilot it. Soon after discovering this scientists had studied the youth, finding that his brain operated at a different frequency than the average human, somehow allowing him to pilot these mecha. After searching the compound for similar individuals, a sizeable number (mostly between the ages of 15 and 21) exhibited the same mental anomaly and ability to pilot the mysterious robots.

After careful thought the commander of Area 51 has decided to send the mecha pilots on their first mission to gather information on the Bugs and to test the mecha’s ability against them. The PCs will all be a part of this squad.

The players will all be humans who possess the psychic abilities strong enough to allow them to pilot the Mecha. Even those who show no overt signs of psionic talent (latent psychics) still seem to be able to pilot the mecha as if it were an extension of their bodies.  They could be doing this for their homeland, for power, to test themselves, or anything else the players can come up with for their characters. There are only a few rules to follow in character creation.

  1. They must be in the military as that’s the only way they may have the mecha in the first place. They must be at least somewhat loyal to the military and also the humans.

  2. They must be psychic humans. Though this is used very loosely it means that they may only get Paranormal and Normal Attributes (Other Attributes may be allowed also if you have an explanation for it fitting to a psychic individual) with the Paranormal attributes being only psychic ones. No reincarnation or metamorphosis for example.

  3. They will all be required to have at least lvl 3 in the Owns A Big Mecha attribute as each player must have their own mecha.

The requirement for the mecha is rather simple.  Besides this the mecha have no limits on attributes that they can get and other such things.  All the mecha in this campaign share a single piece of hardware.

  1. Psychic Core-The mecha’s power core is actually run by the pilot’s psychic energy (EP).  The pilot is drained of his energy by 10 EP every 10 minutes in combat conditions and 5 EP every hour when piloting it out of combat.
